Elevate Your Yoga Practice: 10 Holistic Ways to magnify your enjoyment.

So, you made it to the yoga class? Great! Now, here are 10 ways you can make your yoga experience 10 times more enjoyable.

If you are avid yogi, you know that embarking on a yoga journey is not just about physical postures; it’s also a holistic experience that you can personalize to tailor it to your needs and taste, and that makes it much more satisfying.

I am sharing the following ideas because these have worked for me. I feel they have deepen my connection with the practice. So, think of them as intentional additions you can make to your yoga practice, to help you turn it into a deeply personalized and enriching journey.

1. Bring a journal:

Yes! Bring a journal to your yoga sessions.

Keeping a journal was a game-changer in my yoga journey. Whether it’s a breakthrough in a challenging pose, a profound thought during meditation, or even a simple emotion, jotting it down allows me to reflect on my growth and helps me stay present.

Nice Yoga Journal: I remember when I started my yoga journey (in China), I was going through a particularly deep and transformative time in my life. I used to carry a journal with me, everywhere I went. As a beginner, I recall a particularly challenging class, where I found myself struggling with a head stand. Instead of getting frustrated, I wrote about the difficulty in my journal and how I managed to stay focused and optimistic. A few years later, I revisited that journal and discovered a pattern of perseverance that inspired me in future practices.

I smiled remembering that class where I mastered the head stand, which to me, was the moment I overcame the barrier of my own mind. “I did it!” was the opening line in that page of the journal.

Along the years, I have kept the habit of carrying a journal to my class, because I always say “the yoga class does not end when Savasana ends! After the class, we need to process the thoughts, insights and feelings the yoga class bring about. You write them down, then the class ends. If you do not capture realizations, intentions and all those other important reflections, they tend to be forgotten the moment we leave the yoga studio.

2. Choose the Perfect Yoga Mat:

3. Explore Different Yoga Styles:

Keep your practice dynamic by exploring various yoga styles. Whether it’s Vinyasa, Hatha, or Kundalini, diversifying your routine challenges your body and mind, fostering continuous growth and exploration on your yoga journey.

Trying different yoga styles exposes you to a broader range of poses, techniques, and philosophies. Not to mention that various styles of yoga come with different meditative and mindfulness practices. By exploring these diverse approaches, you can discover which techniques resonate most with you.

Yoga has deep roots in spirituality, and various styles may incorporate different philosophies and spiritual teachings. For this reason, trying different yoga styles may evoke distinct emotional responses in you. For example, a gentle and restorative class may promote relaxation and introspection, while a dynamic vinyasa flow might instill a sense of energy and vitality. Engaging in different yoga styles prevents your practice from plateauing. If you find yourself getting bored or stagnant in your routine, trying something new can reignite your passion and motivation, challenging your body and mind in novel ways. That is because each yoga style encourages a specific focus on breath, alignment, and awareness. By experiencing a variety of styles, you develop a heightened sense of mind-body connection.

Ultimately, variety adds an element of enjoyment to your practice.

4. Incorporate Essential Oils:

I always bring this bottle of oil to the class. While we need to be careful with fragrances in a gym class, rolling a tad of ORANGE oil or other energizing oil can make a difference in my mood. Many essential oils are used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and enhance mood. But ORANGE, has a pleasant and aromatic citric scent, that can have a direct impact on the limbic system, which is involved in emotions, passion and memory. All citrus oils like lemon or bergamot and can be uplifting but orange’s sweet smells add to that effect, make it an absolute FAVORITE!

While citrus oils are my favorites, yogis recommend softer one for a more tranquil experience, for example lavender or chamomile. The point is, to the extend that you can, enhance your yoga experience with the power of aromatherapy. You can diffuse calming essential oils like lavender or eucalyptus to create a serene ambiance. The aromatic influence can promote relaxation, mindfulness, and deeper breath awareness. A good friend of mine adds a drop of oil in her volcanic bead bracelet before the class starts. If you do hot yoga, you would be happy you followed this tip!

5. Use a Shaman Drum for Intention Setting:

As bizarre as this one sounds, you can incorporate the rhythmic beats of a shaman drum into your Yoga pre-class routine.

Use Shaman drums before for setting intentions, creating a sacred space and connecting with the energy of the present moment. The drum’s vibrations can help ground and center your focus. I generally use them in the morning, as part of my meditation routine.

In recent years, I found that having a drum & reflection session at the start of my day, makes me ten times more prone to want to make it to my class. I get it, some can be very expensive, but here is a list of Shaman Drums that can be actually very affordable.

Incorporating a shaman drum into my pre-class routine has added a spiritual dimension to my practice. The rhythmic beats help me ground myself and set clear intentions for the session, creating a sacred space that transcends the physical postures. Before a class focused on heart-opening poses, I used the shaman drum to guide my intention towards self-love and compassion. The resonance of the drum became a powerful reminder throughout the practice, enhancing my connection with the intended energy.

6. Set an intention for your practice

Don’t just show up and go! Begin your yoga class by setting a positive intention. Whether it’s focusing on gratitude, self-love, or mindfulness, having a clear intention can guide your practice and provide a sense of purpose.

7. Use positive affirmation Card Decks to fuel your meditation:

Bringing a deck of positive affirmation cards to your practice makes your experience totally next level!

Positive affirmation Cards: As a Tarot card reader, I love cards, and I particularly love this set. People will tell you that you cannot read your own cards, but when you are doing yoga, or meditating, you are in (or very close to achieving) full alignment with your spiritual guidance system. So cards and Yoga are the perfect match. Plus, these positive affirmation cards are simply gorgeous.

It is incredible how much they help you stay focus on affirmations rather than letting the brain take over with its own thoughts. Draw a card before or after each session, allowing the messages to guide and inspire you. This simple ritual can infuse positivity into your mindset, promoting a more optimistic and uplifting yoga experience.
