If you have loved dancing your entire life, but found it hard to deal with the ‘show off’ nature of some parties, this article is for you!
As someone who has always loved dancing — who finds joy in rhythm and freedom in movement — I’ve spent years expressing myself through dance (from the dance floors of Cuba, to China, to Kenya, to Mexico and even here in Canada). But deep inside, I always felt something was missing. I didn’t fully understand it until I stumbled into an ecstatic dance circle — barefoot, raw, wild, sacred, held in a retreat that I remember it was called ‘Barefoot Buggie”… I thought it was not going to be ‘my gig’… but boy, oh, boy, was I ever in for a surprise!!
What a pleasant surprise it was to be surrounded not by performers, not by people seeking validation, but by souls genuinely dancing to connect with their essence… and with the music itself. It was meditative. It was healing. It was finally everything I had been looking for in movement.
🌿 Dance as a Spiritual Practice
In the spiritual and wellness world, ecstatic dance has become more than just a trend — it’s a movement. Literally and energetically.
This freeform dance practice, often done without words and without mirrors, invites people to release expectations and drop into the body. The idea is simple: no choreography, no performance — just authentic movement.
My salsa dancing friends don’t get it, because in ecstatic dancing there’s no “wrong” way to move. You follow your breath, your emotions, your heartbeat, your deepest desires… The music becomes a guide, and the dance becomes a prayer. We dance in silence (among each other) because there is so much we are communicating inwards.
📜 A Sacred History: Dance Across Cultures
Ecstatic dance isn’t new. It’s ancient — as old as fire circles and tribal drums. From the whirling dervishes of Sufi tradition to the trance dances of indigenous African tribes, humans have always turned to rhythmic movement to heal, grieve, celebrate, and transcend.
In these traditions, dance was not entertainment. It was medicine.
I have been so lucky to have traveled the world and seen the various forms of expressions there are. They are all right. Everyone dances their own way. Today, this spirit lives on — at festivals, healing retreats, and sacred circles all over the world. When included as part of a wellness retreat, ecstatic dance helps participants shake off stress, process emotions, and reconnect with their inner wild.
🧠 What Science Says About Dance & Mental Health
While the spiritual benefits of dance are powerful, science is catching up too. Here’s what studies say:
- Reduces Cortisol: A 2014 study in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that dance — especially when done freely and expressively — helps reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and promotes a sense of vitality and joy.
- Releases “Feel-Good” Hormones: Dancing releases endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin — the brain chemicals that make us feel good, connected, and peaceful.
- Improves Brain Function: According to research published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, dance can enhance cognitive flexibility, body awareness, and emotional regulation.
- Supports Trauma Release: Freeform movement allows stored trauma in the body to be gently expressed and released. As Dr. Bessel van der Kolk writes in The Body Keeps the Score, movement-based therapies are vital in healing from deep emotional wounds.
In short: dancing helps us come home to ourselves.
✨ Ecstatic Dance at Our Wellness Retreats
That’s why at every wellness retreat we host, we include a night of ecstatic dance and beach fire circle. After days of deep chakra work, sound healing, journaling, and meditation, this is where we let go. We integrate. We express. We celebrate.
Some dance with their eyes closed. Some cry. Some laugh. Some scream into the wind. It’s not about being seen — it’s about being felt, by your own body and spirit.
“That night of dancing barefoot under the stars… I felt alive for the first time in years.”
— Wellness Retreat Participant, 2024
“It was the kind of dance I dreamed of as a child. No judgment. Just movement, music, and magic.”
💃 Dance to Heal, Not to Perform
If you’ve ever felt pressure to dance right, to be “good” at it, or to hold back out of fear of being judged… ecstatic dance will liberate you. It’s a chance to move the way your body has always wanted to — free, wild, sacred.
This is what dance was always meant to be.
And when done in community — in a safe, supportive, spiritual space like a retreat — it becomes even more powerful.
Are You Ready to Dance Your Soul Awake?
If you’re longing to feel more grounded, more joyful, more connected to your truth — maybe it’s time to step into the circle.
To let your body speak.
To remember that movement is medicine.
