For those of you that know me well, you already know something about me:
I am deeply into health… but without the pain.
I have never been the kind of person who believes suffering automatically equals transformation.
I don’t believe wellness needs to feel like punishment.
And I definitely don’t believe that hating your body is the path toward finally loving it.
That mindset alone changed my relationship with weight loss forever.
Over the years, my weight has gone up and down in waves. Sometimes because of hormones, sometimes stress, sometimes emotional exhaustion, and honestly… sometimes because life simply became too overwhelming. Between working, hosting retreats, teaching yoga and dance, traveling, caring for family, heartbreaks, rebuilding myself after difficult relationships, and carrying emotional stress that many people never saw behind the scenes, my body responded the way many human bodies do:
it held on.
For a long time, I blamed myself.
I thought I lacked discipline.
I thought maybe I wasn’t trying hard enough.
But eventually, after studying wellness for years and paying closer attention to my own body, I realized something important:
the body is not trying to betray us.
It is trying to protect us.
And one of the biggest reasons many people struggle to lose weight has less to do with laziness… and much more to do with cortisol.
Cortisol is often called the stress hormone, but it’s really a survival hormone. It prepares the body for difficult times. The problem is that modern life keeps many of us trapped in survival mode constantly.
Your body cannot tell the difference between escaping danger in the wild and:
toxic relationships,
financial stress,
constant notifications,
poor sleep,
emotional instability,
or working yourself into exhaustion.
The body simply receives the message:
“We are not safe.”
And when the body thinks hard times are coming, it often stores fat as protection.
That realization changed the way I approached wellness entirely.
Instead of obsessing over punishment, I started focusing on calming my nervous system.
And ironically, that’s when my body started responding better.
1. I stopped trying to “earn” food
One thing I no longer do is punish myself around eating.
I spent years doing what so many women do:
being “good” all day,
eating tiny meals,
then feeling emotionally exhausted and overeating later.
Now I eat foods I genuinely love—but with awareness.
One of the best things I ever bought was a simple food scale. Not because I wanted obsession, but because I wanted honesty. Portion sizes are sneaky. Healthy food can still become excessive without us realizing it.
So now I enjoy my meals fully while staying aware of how much I’m actually consuming.
That changed everything psychologically.
Because deprivation creates rebellion.
2. I learned that stress was affecting my body more than food sometimes
There were periods in my life where I barely ate badly… and still gained weight.
At first it made no sense to me.
But then I connected the dots:
those periods were also the times I was emotionally drowning.
Work stress.
Relationship stress.
Lack of sleep.
Emotional chaos.
I remember one particularly intense period where I felt like I was constantly “on.” My nervous system never relaxed. Even at night my brain was racing. I would wake up tired, crave sugar constantly, retain water, and feel swollen no matter what I ate.
That’s when I truly began understanding cortisol.
The body under chronic stress behaves very differently than a body that feels safe.
3. Sound healing unexpectedly became part of my weight loss journey
This part of my story still makes me smile because I never planned for it.
Many of you know I attend wellness festivals around Ontario, especially near Ottawa, where you find everything from yoga workshops to ecstatic dance, meditation tents, and sound healing circles.
The first time I experienced sound healing with crystal bowls, I remember thinking:
“What is happening to my nervous system right now?”
I felt my body physically soften.
Not dramatically.
Not magically.
Just… calmer.
And over time I noticed something fascinating:
when I was calmer, I craved less emotional comfort through food.
So I started incorporating sound healing more consistently into my life. Eventually I began bringing singing bowls with me to Cuba for my wellness retreats because I saw how deeply people responded to them.
There’s something powerful about watching exhausted people finally exhale.
Especially in today’s world where everyone is overstimulated all the time.
No, sound bowls don’t directly burn fat.
But calming the nervous system changes behaviors connected to weight gain.
That part is very real.

C NOTE BOWL (See the video review)
A C note singing bowl is often associated with the root chakra, the energetic center connected to grounding, stability, and feeling safe in your body and environment. I love using deep C note vibrations during meditation or before bed because the sound creates a calming, anchoring effect that helps quiet an overstimulated nervous system and bring me back into the present moment.
4. I changed the energy of my evenings
I used to work late under bright white lights, staring at screens, overstimulating my brain until midnight.
And then I wondered why my sleep was terrible.
Now my evenings feel completely different.
I use softer lighting, aurora lamps, calming scents, magnesium, relaxing music, and sometimes vitamin E oil mixed with essential oils as part of a nighttime ritual.
Not because I think it’s mystical.
Because the nervous system responds to environment.
Harsh lighting keeps the brain alert.
Soft environments help the body shift into rest.
Your bedroom should not feel like a hospital waiting room.

AURORA LAMP (See the video review)
Most of us spend our evenings under bright white lights that keep the brain stimulated long after the sun goes down. The nervous system interprets that brightness as a signal to stay alert, productive, and awake. But the body was never designed to wind down under lighting that feels more like an office than a sanctuary.
5. I stopped forcing workouts I hated
I have done the punishing workouts.
The bootcamp mentality.
The “no pain no gain” phase.
And honestly?
It made me dread exercise.
These days I move in ways that feel nourishing:
walking,
dancing,
yoga,
strength training,
stretching,
swimming when I can.
Ironically, once movement became pleasurable instead of punishment, I became much more consistent.
That consistency matters far more than temporary extremes.

My favorite yoga mat: A yoga mat is a personal thing! I do not understand the concept of borrowing mats from the studio. It is like a bed, a place where you lie down, put your face, dream good dreams and rest your energy. So your mat is to your class the same thing that your bed is to your bedroom. Just like you do with your bed, choose your mat well. Invest time in finding the ideal mat for you. Consider factors like thickness, material, and texture. Personally, I also consider colour and design. I don’t know if you know this, but I love dragonflies. So I became fascinated with one I saw in Chapters with the design of a dragonfly and dream-wishing dandelions. I had to buy it!
6. Creatine completely changed my perspective on women’s fitness
I used to think creatine was only for bodybuilders.
But once I started learning more about muscle preservation, energy production, recovery, and women’s health, my perspective shifted.
Maintaining muscle while losing fat matters tremendously, especially as we age.
Women are often taught to focus only on becoming smaller.
But strength matters.
Energy matters.
Metabolism matters.
The goal should never be becoming fragile.

CREATINE (See the video review)
Creatine is one of the most researched supplements in the wellness and fitness world, yet many women still misunderstand its benefits and assume it is only for bodybuilders. During a weight loss journey, creatine can help support muscle preservation, energy levels, recovery, and overall strength, which is incredibly important because maintaining healthy muscle mass helps support metabolism and long-term fat loss in a balanced and sustainable way.
7. I became more protective of my peace
This one may sound unrelated to weight loss, but it isn’t.
Some people dysregulate your nervous system constantly.
You leave conversations tense.
You overthink afterward.
You sleep poorly.
You emotionally eat.
You stay in fight-or-flight mode.
I’ve lived enough life now to recognize that emotional chaos absolutely affects physical health.
The body absorbs stress from environments, relationships, and unresolved tension.
Protecting your peace is not laziness.
It is health care.
8. I stopped eating unconsciously
I realized I was often eating while distracted:
scrolling,
working,
watching TV,
answering messages.
The brain barely registers satisfaction that way.
Now I try to sit down and actually enjoy food.
Not perfectly.
But intentionally.
That simple shift helped me recognize fullness much better.

FOOD SCALE (See the video review)
One of the healthiest mindset shifts I made during my wellness journey was learning that using a food scale is not about restriction—it’s about awareness and honesty. Most of us drastically underestimate portion sizes without realizing it, especially with healthy foods that we assume are automatically “safe.” Having a scale helped me stop guessing and start understanding what my body actually needed, without obsessing or starving myself.
9. Sleep became sacred
I truly underestimated sleep for years.
But sleep deprivation affects hunger hormones, cravings, cortisol, impulse control, recovery, and energy.
Now I protect my nighttime routine almost aggressively.
Magnesium.
Low lights.
Less stimulation.
Relaxing music.
Essential oils.
No emotional chaos before bed if possible.
Because a tired nervous system will always seek comfort.
Usually through sugar, overeating, or emotional coping.
10. I stopped hating myself into transformation
This may be the biggest lesson of all.
You cannot constantly shame your body while expecting it to flourish.
Many people are carrying bodies that have survived stress, grief, heartbreak, hormonal shifts, trauma, emotional overload, burnout, and survival mode for years.
Your body is not your enemy.
Sometimes it is simply adapting to the life you’ve been living.
And healing often begins the moment we stop approaching wellness like punishment.
Weight loss is not just about calories.
It’s about hormones.
Stress.
Sleep.
Environment.
Emotions.
Nervous system regulation.
Consistency.
Peace.

MEDITATION CUSHIONS (See the video review)

I love using deep C note vibrations during meditation or before bed because the sound creates a calming, anchoring effect that helps quiet an overstimulated nervous system and bring me back into the present moment.
And sometimes the most powerful thing you can do for your health… is create a life where your body no longer feels like it is fighting to survive every single day.

Weight loss products “that sooth the soul”
One of the simplest changes I made in my home that unexpectedly affected my mood, sleep, and even my nighttime cravings was replacing harsh overhead lighting with an aurora lamp. Aurora lamps create a completely different atmosphere. The soft movement of colors across the walls feels calming, almost hypnotic in the best way. It slows the energy of the room down. And after stressful days, especially during periods where my cortisol levels felt constantly elevated, I noticed that softer lighting helped my body transition into rest mode much more easily. I now use aurora lighting during meditation, journaling, stretching, sound healing sessions, and my nighttime routine before bed. It transforms ordinary moments into something softer and more intentional.
